Does Sex Sell?

We see all the glossy magazines with photos of beautiful models both women and men.  They advertise clothes, shoes, perfumes, hair products, makeup and numerous other items.  There are even more advertisements on television with gorgeous women and hunky men.

What woman hasn't drooled over the beautiful swishing hair of actress/model Andie McDowell? Everyone would love to look like the models who wear Cover Girl makeup. Sometimes, dancers are used to model clothes and shoes, especially kids' shoes.

You're probably wondering what is bringing about all these thoughts, so I'm going to get to the point now.  My publisher decided a while back to make new covers for my books; you know update their look.  The first thing I noticed was there is a sexy looking couple on each cover.

The romantic couples look great on my new book covers, but I am going to be eager to learn if these covers sell more books.  What do you think, does sex sell?

Have a great week, and I'll see you next weekend.

As far as pics I'm not sure if sex sells. But I think an interesting cover helps! However - there's got to be a good story on the inside.

I talked about book covers with my counselor. She said that a study was done about people's faces and that babies would only look at eyes and faces, not at any other object. They also did studies on faces as focal points for advertising and people were more interested in people's faces than objects. We deduced that faces on books would sell better than objects and can't understand that new wave of objects on covers like 50 Shades. I know that I'm more interested in books with hot couples on covers than anything else, including just a hot guy. I'd love to add your evidence to my study. :)

My best seller is the one with a very sexy looking couple on the cover. Plus, it's also one of my more graphic books. Guess I need to write another one? ROFL!

According to an article I read, the Romance genre outsells all other genre's combined. So it's probably not just the cover, but also the story content.

I like your new covers, Sandy. I think in the case of the covers, it depends on what the book is about. If you have a sexy cover for a book that's not sexy, the reader will feel tricked. As for 50 Shades, I've read that the cover intrigued people and NOT having a sexy cover for those books doesn't seem to have hurt sales!

Thanks, Jeanine, I'm hoping my new covers help sell my books.

Melissa, my publisher believes that having a gorgeous couple on the cover helps.

Molly, my second book is the most graphic one. My sister called it raunchy, but it fit the character.

Tom, the content is always important. Yes, the romance genre is the biggest seller.

Carol, I love my new covers, too. The cover for The Catalyst is more tender than sexy as it should be. Addiction cover is sexy, and the story is graphic. The Deceived has the heroine being aggresive even though she's a virgin. lol

Sandy, sex definitely sells...LOL But on the flipside, I've received several negative reviews from readers who are turned off by the sex (& cursing *grin*). Though usually because they're under the assumption the Welcome To Redemption Series is Christian...it's not...LOL

Love your new covers!

Thank you, Donna. I like them, too. I think you're going to have to explain to your readers that Redemption is a small town. I've read the series, and they are great. Nothing like small town life.
